Thanks for this beautiful meditation! I couldn't agree more. In fact, I wrote a book about why classical music is superior to pop styles, and why true sacred music is superior to the sacro-pop that is usually substituted for it. I think you'd enjoy it!
Wow, so much of this resonated. I've become gradually more and more into classical music, and your observation about the joyful parts not lasting long is so well described! I realized that pop music gives you what you think you want over and over again; if it builds to the delivery, it's a 30 second build. Classical makes you wait and wait and then it delivers something so transcendent just once…and then it's gone. It's incredible what a payoff it is, but always heartbreaking how fast it ends. There's a moment in Beethoven's 3rd, towards the end of the second movement, I think? You'll probably know the part I'm talking about. It builds to a climax and the violins do this spiral downwards…I remember I literally gasped the first time I heard it and I thought it would repeat, but then it didn't. I was so upset at first, but now when I listen to the piece, I'm much more attuned to the entirety so that I can savor that moment.
Ok, didn't want my first comment to ramble for too long, but I raised a baby bird once that listened to the 7th with me and peeped along to it. I never hear it now without thinking of that bird. As if it wasn't already an incredible enough piece of music. Magical indeed!
Holy, holy Hannah, a/k/a Denise! Your words , memories, explanations, exhortations, descriptions bring me to tears. You are such a gifted artist of the language of love, God’s infinite Love. Now I must iTune and download all your favorite concertos, symphonies, melodies, heart-expanding music- and adopt as my very own. Thank you for this “Daily bread”, the gift of you.
Thank you for this beautiful essay. Like the Mass, sometimes when I listen to classical music I am brought to a place that is timeless. I cannot really describe it other than I am brought to tears but not to sorrow. I know that there is ‘here and now’ but that there is more than ‘here’.
how beautiful to recall these memories of "Anamnesis". I especially enjoyed the memory of music, Handel's Water music, the steamy kitchen and the 10year old drunk with power. Your words and memories fill me with joy.
